Homeward Family Shelter
Safety and support for women and their children fleeing violence
About Julliette’s Place
For over 30 years, Homeward Family Shelter (operating as Julliette’s Place) has stood as a beacon of hope and refuge for abused women and their children. It is the only women’s shelter in Northeast Scarborough offering emergency help and comprehensive support services to those fleeing domestic violence.
A highly experienced, dedicated staff team is available 24/7 to provide free, client-centred information and counselling, and to guide residents on their journey to rebuilding their lives. While the typical stays within shelter are 90 days, countless women remain connected to the Julliette’s Place community through its extensive Support Group programming.
As we observe Black History Month, the Board of Directors of Julliette’s Place acknowledges the strength, resilience, and contributions of Black communities across Canada. We also recognize the disproportionate impact of gender-based violence on Black women and their children, who often face additional barriers due to systemic racism, economic inequality, and discrimination in housing, employment, and legal systems.
At Julliette’s Place we are committed to providing a safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive space for all women and children escaping violence. We recognize that Black survivors experience unique challenges, and we must ensure our programs and services reflect the diverse needs of the families we support. This means listening to Black voices, addressing anti-Black racism within our sector, and advocating for systemic change that uplifts and empowers Black women and children.
Black History Month is a time for learning, reflection, and action. It is an opportunity to celebrate Black excellence while also acknowledging the work that remains in building a more just and equitable society. As a Board, we recommit ourselves to fostering an environment where all women and children, especially those who have been historically marginalized can heal, thrive, and feel safe.
We encourage our staff, partners, and community members to take this month to educate themselves on the history and lived realities of Black Canadians, challenge anti-Black racism in all forms, and actively work toward a future free from violence and oppression.
